  26. procedure:

  28. With ResEdit, open a copy of Suitcase II that is not currently in use. Double
  29. click on the INIT resource type; in the ensuing window double-click on INIT
  30. 128 (the only item).  Choose Find Hex from the Find menu.  In the Change Hex
  31. dialog box, *carefully* type the values listed below.   Then click the Find
  32. Next button. (If ResEdit beeps in response, there has been an error.)  Then
  33. click the Change button.  Quit, confirming that changes are to be saved."  End

  72. Has anyone been having trouble with Hermes and Tabby importing Netmail.  Every
  73.   
  74. few days Tabby tells me that it can't unarc a file.  It has started since I
  75. began running System 7.  I wonder if it is System 7 causing the problem.  I
  76. run Tabby 2.2 and Hermes 1.7 both of which are registered.

  98. The LaserWriter 7.0 driver seems to be a bit of a pig for sending all sorts
  99. of extra stuff to the printer - it's also a bigger file that no longer uses
  100. Laser Prep.  So, if you switch to the LW7.0 driver, be prepared for a slowdown.

  102. (Yes, this 7.0 driver _does_ work under all other System versions after 6.0.
  103.  I even use it with software as old as 6.0.3 on a Lisa XL - with and without
  104. the updated ROM from Sun Remarketing.)

  197. Ahh, you misread my message.  I was telling him how to get System 7.0 to run
  198. faster on a 2 Megabyte machine. This will not be the best setup for other

  227. It should work equally well anywhere, but I keep it in the Extensions
  228. folder for conventions sake and it has always worked perfectly.

  230. Did you apply the patch to 1.2.10 after you got it? The author, Steve
  231. Brecher, posted the patch on 23 May and stated that, depending on other
  232. INITs in use, one might experience a spectacular crash, particularly at
  233. startup time (sound familiar?). The bug has been there since 1.2.6 but
  234. shows up most often under System 7.0. The patch has been posted here
  235. several times since then and consists of replacing the Hex string 7007
  236. with 7060 in INIT 128 using ResEdit or equivalent.

  259. The one I know about is called BrainStorm. It's supposed to give a MacPlus 
  260. 2.5x speed (equal or better than a MacII) and is being sold for $199
  261. installed by a dealer here in town. It's not a board, but a chipset
  262. upgrade. They advertised one time in MacWeek, but I haven't seen it since
  263. and don't have their address or number. Two people I know have them
  264. installed in their Plus' and love them.
  265.    
  266. Last week I heard that there is an 030 chipset soon to be announced. The
  267. person who heard that wasn't certain whether it would work in an SE as

  293. I agree with the first part of your statement, it is more efficient and
  294. better than Sys6's desktop management. However, the desktop files it
  295. produces are not the same as Sys7's and my experience has been a 
  296. rebuilding of desktop files with every switch.

  335. Wow, 7-8 minutes wait before the first sheets comes out?  That's intolerable!
  336.  I looked at the LS and it was one of my top choices for a laser printer, but
  337. it looks like I've settled on a HP IIP or IIIP with a Jetlink Express driver.
  338.  The IIP sells with toner and an extra meg of RAM (for a total of 1 1/2 meg
  339. RAM) for $895, and the Jetlink driver/cable package sells for $100 or so. 
  340. Printing
  341. speed is approximately 2 minutes per page off a MacPlus, which is acceptable
  342. if hardly spectacular.  The IIIP has HP's "resolution Enhancement" technology
  343. built-in for better output and comes standard with 1 MEG RAM. It sells for $200
  344. more than a IIP.

  393. That is good news.  Though Apple added more flexibility with Sys7, they didn't
  394. add enough.  I'd still like to turn off zoom rectangles.  I got so used to

  439.      When you upgrade to System 7 (or any other system, for that matter!) the
  440. best way to do it is to a) Copy out all of your fonts into a Font Suitcase,
  441. b) Copy out all of your DAs to a DA Suitcase, c) copy any extra RESEDITed stuff
  442. out into RESEDIT Suitcases, d) throw away the System and Finder files, then
  443. e) Do the install, then f) Restore everything copied out in A,B, and C above.

  473. Plus.  On a friend's IIfx, it seems to be just as instantaneous as it was before

  530.      'Tis working fine in my System folder - not Extensions, not Control Panels,
  531. just the System folder.  To get it there, you will need to open up the System
  532. Folder and drop the SuitCase II INIT ('scuse me, Extension) into the folder
  533. (drag on top of a stand-alone file, for instance.)
  534.

  648. I work in a enviroment where I would love to use System 7 but only my machine
  649. would be able to use it since I am the only one with enough memory and HD
  650. space.  Most work stations are still run from floppy using Tops to get to a
  651. main HD where they store the programs.  Does anyone know of a way I can use
  652. System 7 with tops to connect to these other computers or of any other way
  653. that might work better so I can use System 7 at work and not just at home.

  1038. No, under 7.0 "Set Startup" was removed and replaced by the Startup Items
  1039. folder.  The Install 1 Diskette has a very minimal System, the Installer
  1040. and its script, it seems to be specially created to boot into the
  1041. Installer, because merely copying the files to a diskette does not allow
  1042. it to boot, it will crash.

  1140. Yes, it is made by a company called BrainStorm.  It works on the Mac Plus.

  1142. It works great under System 6, but it slows down AppleTalk considerably when

  1144. run on System 7.  They are working on a fix for this.  It is a pretty simple
  1145.   
  1146. upgrade, consists of a new timing chip to replace the Apple Timing Chip, 
  1147. capacitors to go under each ROM, a daughter board that plugs into the back 
  1148. of the 68000.  The daughter board has very few chips on it, I believe three.
  1149.    
  1150. Supposedly it does NOT screw up the sound unlike most 68000 accelerators.  I
  1151.   
  1152. plan on getting one once they fix the System 7 AppleTalk bug.

  1224. Sure.  Just go into the finder, find the icons that you want to replace, note
  1225. the ID numbers, cut the icons, go into the batch of replacement icons and find
  1226.   
  1227. the ones you want, change their ID numbers to the numbers of the ones you cut
  1228. from the finder, then copy and paste them into the finder.  It's not
  1229. difficult, and complete and detailed directions are in Herb Goodman's "ResEdit
  1230.   
  1231. Primer 6.0".  Duplicate files and only work on the duplicates, always.  Enjoy.

  1296. Michael, save the story, 6.0.7 will work fine on any Mac - period. Init
  1297. conflicts are usually poorly written inits that can be salvaged by
  1298. modifying the loading order. I would be willing to bet I could install

  1373. If you do have that option checked, turn it off. If it is off, then look to
  1374. your inits. Things just shouldn't be that slow.

  1504. background. I for one was able to recover and use MS-File on the BBS
  1505. Computer.  With the old beta finder for sub-launching tabby event chains I 
  1506. could not use MS-File as it died. (Microsoft using non-recommended direct
  1507. hardware/memory addressing calls instead of ROM traps.)

  1576. I noticed that after I reloaded Sum Partition with system 7.0, none of my
  1577. DAs would work, and they kept giving me an error -97. It took a while for
  1578. me to realize that the init was causing the problem.
  1579. Just a word of advice for those (like me) who haven't heard that
  1580. some partitioning programs wreak havoc on your system during installation
  1581. and use. Remove them entirely before proceeding.

  1649. You should turn off both "Calculate Folder Sizes," and Virtual Memory
  1650. unless you ha?ve a need for it to speed-up Finder actions.  Even if you
  1651. find the Finder slow for some actions, consider that the conscens?? seems
  1652. to be that some Finder actions are faster.  An example is disk copying. 
  1653. And you can do some copying in the background. Those functions alone would 
  1654. make up for other slowness for a lot of people who use those functions a
  1655. lot.  Also, some application functions seem to run faster.
  1656.    
  1657. There was also a report that increasing the partition size of the FInder
  1658. helped speed the Finder up.  This was countered by someone saying it
  1659. wouldn't do so based on the System/Finder design.  However, you might try
  1660. it.

  1680. Your might try installing the DA directly into the application (WriteNow). 
  1681.  To do this use FontDA Mover, Hold down the option key and do an Open,
  1682. then open the application.  I understand some people used this method to
  1683. solve a similar problem with MicroSoft Word.

  1855. The difference between the two disks is the versions of the systems on them.
  1856.   
  1857. The 800K disks have System 6.0.4 and the high density disks have System 6.0.7.
  1858.   
  1859.  The reason for this is that the Norton Utilities program is so large that it
  1860. can barely fit on an 800K disk with System 6.0.4 with later systems it will
  1861. not fit on an 800K disk.  The newer Macs require a more recent system.  You
  1862. could probably use the high density disk Norton Emergency disks on the other
  1863. systems but I am not sure. If they used some sort of minimal installation on
  1864. the high density disk, it may not be able to boot certain Macs.  
  1865. BTW, on the 800K disks, Norton Utilities 1.1 is actually 7K smaller than 1.0.

  1867. The 1.1 disk has 785K with 1K free; the 1.0 disk has 792K with 1K free.  I

  1928. I saw your list of inits/cdevs. Personally, I'm amazed at how much still works
  1929. under System 7, and how much is no longer necessary. I'm also amazed that I'm
  1930. back up to two rows of inits again. Grrr....

  1932. Just a few things about your list though. First, you might be pleasantly
  1933. surprised
  1934. if you disable Mouse II., and put the mouse on its highest setting in the Mouse
  1935. cdev. They've sped it up in System 7 (don't do this with the Mouse II init
  1936. running
  1937. cause I think it will interfere).
  1938.   
  1939. Next, there is a new version of SCSI Probe out that you might want to get. It's
  1940. v. 3.1.
  1941.   
  1942. Next, SuperClock interfered with MS Word once I got a color monitor. That's
  1943. why I no longer use it. Just a word of caution about an otherwise great init.

  1945. Last, I've read on AOL, from the CE Tech Support, that QuicKeys 2.0.1 is NOT
  1946. compatible with Sys7. I've also been told that it has been described as
  1947. DANGEROUS
  1948. under System 7. I would wait till the upgrade arrives if I were you. In fact,
  1949. if you're impatient, you can download it from their BBS in Florida. I don't
  1950. have the number here, but it should be easy to track down.

  2055. Yes, I have experienced the same problems.  Despite all the postings that say
  2056. that System 7.0 manages the heap dynamically, I've found that using HeapTool
  2057. v1.4 with heap set at 256k, has reduced my Imagewriter printing time from
  2058. four times that of 6.0.7 to only twice as long.
  2059.   
  2060. My wife is a student though, cranking out tons of stuff through the printer,
  2061. so I've made her a System 6.0.7 boot floppy with the old Imagewriter driver.
  2062. She does all her "work" in System 6.0.7, and I do all my "playing" in System
  2063. 7.0... seems that's all it's good for, for us anyway.

  2122. Believe it or not, I have previously  successfully used ResEdit 2.1 to
  2123. edit my system 7 version of my Finder file, to add the "Empty Trash"
  2124. Command-T command key to the Special Menu.  I also added a Command-M
  2125. command key for the "Make Alias" entry under the file menu.  I still
  2126. luckily have these changes as part of my Finder.  I did this by opening
  2127. Finder with ResEdit, then opening the "fmnu" entry, then double
  2128. clicking on the 1252 entry under ID.  Making the appropriate changes in
  2129. the then resulting window was self-evident.  
  2130.   
  2131. But when I just tried to do the same thing, or rather to bring up that
  2132. same easy to understand window, the resulting window is only a mass of
  2133. meaningless hex data!  What could have happened?  I've seen talk of
  2134. adding templates to ResEdit, which I did not understand.  I also had
  2135. aquired some of the templates from a friend, fiddled with them, got
  2136. strange results, and have since trashed that modified version of
  2137. ResEdit and those other confusing and not understood "Template" files. 
  2138. But I can only guess that I had somehow modified ResEdit to enable me
  2139. to make my Finder changes.  My friend has since moved away.  Can any
  2140. knowledgeable ResEdit users help me out? . . . David

  2303. A strange quetion.  Why is it that sometimes when you empty the trash under
  2304. System 7 that it acts just like system 6 and the files in the trash just go
  2305. poof,
  2306. while sometimes it pops  up that annoying dialog what tells you how many files
  2307. are being trashed, and you have to WAIT for it to empty the trash?  It there
  2308. any way to override that feature so that the trash always just goes poof?

  2378. display, and have the size option, label option and recalc folder options turned
  2379. off from the Views Control Panel, there should be no noticable slowdown.

  2799. If so go into your TabbyMail Received folder with a text editor and clear it,
  2800. be sure to place the pointer in the uppermost left corner then close it. Now
  2801. unark the rascal and you will get one or more xxxxxxxx.PKT in the Generic
  2802. Folder.
  2803. Open TMreceived again and put in the paths in the form:
  2804.   
  2805. Hard Drive:BBS:Generic Folder:0065010E.PKT for each packet, close and run Tabby
  2806. deliver mail and that should do it.
  2807.   
  2808. Of course, if that's not your problem, this wont help much. The only other thing
  2809. I have found occasionally, the TabbyMail Received will have a number of paths
  2810. already there, if this is the case try cutting the first one out and paste it
  2811. at the bottom and run DeliverMail again manually.

  2813. The Mail received folder must have something on the first line or it will not
  2814. run. Extra carriage rturns or spaces to start the line off will give it fits!
  2815.

  3200. taken up by the System Software.  I don't think the fonts affect the amout of

  3406. I did the direct install of the WordMaster DA into the WriteNow
  3407. application. I have experienced consistent system "freezes" when
  3408. attempting to use the Thesaurus under System 7. I just don't believe that
  3409. everything is implemented cleanly using this procedure.

  3476. yes it has found bad blocks, I had several bad Hd's that would format
  3477. on IBM's and they told me from 5 to 20k in bad blocks while formating
  3478. when I used the floppies under system seven as DOS transfer disks 
  3479. I took a shot and formatted one BOOM it FInnally formatted after 
  3480. having run it over 20 times through several different FX'es drives.
  3481. I have since been able to format all my bad disk under Magnificent
  3482. 7.0...hehehe

  3564. affect the size of the system.  With 6.0 and prior, the fonts were

  3672.   
  3673. or number of files, the Finder automatically puts up that dialog box.. I
  3674. personally like it, as a few files are "poofed", but when I through 650 in
  3675. there, at least I know when it will be done.. and man, is it fast at that
  3676. deleting thing! ;-)

  3729. it is on display.  Every see the 'Largest Free Block' number dance back and
  3730. forth over a 5-6K range?  Happens to me quite often.

  3829. mcuuch space.  This was supposed to please printers and other people who 
  3830. installed tons of fonts and arram n out of ram or had to use

  3969. Adding fonts will not increase the heap size; deleting them will not
  3970. decrease it.  Adding and removing INITs/Extensions (which aren't part of
  3971. the System file) will have more effect on the System heap.

  4063. Font resources, for the most part, remain on the hard disk and are not
  4064. loaded into RAM when the system loads. I don't know the technical details
  4065. of this, but I would guess that the font currently in use has a bit-map
  4066. representation in RAM while you are using it and when you print, certain
  4067. information is passed to the printer during that printing, but most of the 
  4068. time getting rid of fonts only saves you HD space and little if any RAM.

  4295. do with Wordmaster and WriteNow.

  4297. Use the System Seven version of Font/DA Utility. 
  4298.  Choose WordMaster.
  4299.  For the other window, hold down the option key (might be the command key, 
  4300. I know it's one or the other) and go into the directory that holds the
  4301. Writenow Application. As long as the option key is down, it will let you
  4302. select the WriteNow Application. 
  4303.  Copy WordMaster directly into the WriteNow Application.
  4304.  That's it.
  4305.  Make sure that don't leave a copy of WordMaster in the System Directory.

  4399.    When you select the "About This Macintosh" from the Apple menu in the
  4400. Finder it tells you the type of Mac you have, the amount installed memory
  4401. (RAM), how much, if any, Virtual memory you're using, how much memory you
  4402. have free to use, and the list below the in the scrollable area tells you
  4403. how much memory each open application is using.  
  4404.    The memory usage of both the System and the Finder are lumped together in
  4405. the heading "System Software."  The amount of memory your "System Software"
  4406. is using depends on how many extensions you have installed, how much memory
  4407. you have installed, whether or not you're using Virtual, and finally on the
  4408. type of Macintosh you have.  (Also whether or not you did a minimum install,
  4409. or a full install, of System 7)
  4410.    
  4411.    Deleting Fonts and or Sounds from the System file itself will NOT
  4412. decrease the amount of memory it uses, just the amount of space (in
  4413. Kilobytes) that it takes on your Hard Drive.  
  4414.   
  4415.    You might benefit from finding and downloading the HyperCard stack
  4416. "Before You Install System 7" and running it from start to finish.  A lot of
  4417. useful information is contained in that stack.  
  4418.    There is also a MS Word 4 document entitled "7.0 Q&A database-Word final"
  4419. that will answer a number of the questions that I've seen so far in this
  4420. echo.

  4422.    Both of these files should be available on any BBS that you call that is
  4423. licensed to distribute Apple Software.

  4467.    Hmmm, that's interesting.  I ran QK 2.01 for three days without any
  4468. problems.  Of course, I only had access to the "Universal Keyset" and
  4469. everything didn't work the way it's supposed to, but other than somethings

  4472.    Also, the upgrade to QK v2.1 has been out for a few weeks now, and its
  4473. not a freebee.  At the very least its going to cost anyone $15 to upgrade
  4474. from v2.0x to v2.1.  If you haven't upgraded since 1.2.x, then the upgrade
  4475. will cost you $49.95.   
  4476.    Registered owners (of any of the versions) should have received the
  4477. upgrade notice in early June.  I received my upgrade on 7/15.  (Or
  4478. thereabouts.)   If you haven't been notified of the upgrade, then I suggest
  4479. that you have your registration number handy and call CE Software for
  4480. upgrade information.

  4621. I never did like Multifinder.  Too much screen clutter.  So it was nice to find
  4622. utilities which would allow me to easily hide all but the active application.
  4623.  Now comes System 7, with its thoughtful provision allowing me to hide or show
  4624. various open applications.  And I can even automatically hide all but the one
  4625. I'm making active by holding down the Option key when I select it.  What I CAN'T
  4626. do, however, is change the default for that option.  I almost ALWAYS want to
  4627. hide all but the currently active application, which means that I have to almost
  4628. ALWAYS hold down the option key when selecting an open application from the
  4629. menu.  That means two hands, one for keyboard, one for mouse, just to switch
  4630. from one application to another.  If not that, it means two mousies: one to
  4631. select the desired application and then another to select "Hide Others".  
  4632.   
  4633. So....  Have any of you 7.0 gurus figured out how to change that sort of default
  4634. so that only the currently active application will be visible UNLESS the option
  4635. key is held down?

  4657. Presuming that you installed sys7 into a new 'System Folder' and just unblessed
  4658. the 6.0.x folder; go into the sys6 folder and 'rebless' it. It won't show as
  4659. blessed, but SysSwitch will recognize the system there and allow you to switch
  4660. back and forth. I have been using both on my SE/30 from release of sys7 (and
  4661. DL of SysSwitch) with no difficulty. I've even taken it one step further - If
  4662. you have a little utility called Hide It!, reboot into sys6 and use Hide It!
  4663. to hide the desktop folder and the trash folder from sys7 (so you never move
  4664. them, open them, etc) and you "shouldn't" have to ever go through a destop
  4665. rebuild
  4666. either for sys7. This presumes that you haven't started up off an external
  4667. floppy
  4668. with sys6 before switching the HD over to sys6 and it requires that you not
  4669. store anything you might want under sys6 on the desktop while in sys7 (since
  4670. you have now hidden that folder with Hide It!).

  4830. have the SE's disk cache turned on?  Did the SE have AppleTalk turned

  4850. I use Pyro for screen saving.  I have it configured to wake up when the modem
  4851. is busy.  In this way when someone calls Pyro goes off and as long as modem
  4852. is 
  4853. busy it does not come on.  This make the BBS to be faster, since Pyro is not
  4854. using any CPU in that period (all screen savers slow down CPU).
  4855.   
  4856. This work with Hermes very well.  But with SS it does not work since it checks
  4857.   
  4858. the modem every thirty seconds.  That wakes the Pyro up since Pyro thinks
  4859. modem is active.

  4861. Can new version of SS use a routine that does not need to check the modem
  4862. every thirty seconds, so this is fixed.  I am using Hermes right now and that
  4863. is one of the reason I am doing it.

  4923. A friend has a problem that's driving him nuts.  He is running System 7 on a
  4924. MacPlus and uses a LaserWriter 2NT.  Anywhere fro 20-40 percent of the time
  4925. when he tries to print he gets a "LaserWriter Cant Be Found" message.  If he
  4926. chooses the option to try again, usually all will go well.
  4927.   
  4928. He has reinstalled System 7, turned off all INITs, and reinstalled fresh fonts
  4929. to no avail.  It seems the printer is not staying selected in the Chooser.
  4930.   
  4931. Anyone experiecing this have a fix?
